As well as all of the year-round and seasonal activities you can enjoy in Enniscrone, we are also lucky enough to have the fantastic Black Pig Festival to look forward to each year. The festival is a weekend of activities, music and family fun with something for all ages. Here are the highlights and some more details about this year’s festival:
Sligo’s most picturesque and popular seaside town, Enniscrone. This year's festival takes place from 26th to 30th July 2018.
Believe it or not, the festival takes its name from a tale in Irish folklore about an evil old pig! The black boar (or pig) was said to have been possessed by an evil spirit and terrorised the town of Muckdubh killing men, women and children. This was until the villagers got together and slayed the evil pig with spears. The animal could not be feasted upon as its flesh was poisonous so the town decided to bury it. The mound under which it’s buried still stands there to this day and is marked with a huge pig statue.
